Golf wedges are part of the iron family of clubs, but they have a very specific purpose. There are three primary styles of wedge; the sand wedge, lob wedge, and gap wedge. They are primarily designed for making very short but precise shots.
Golf wedges feature shorter shafts and higher loft characteristics than other clubs. They are designed to send the ball high into the air, but with very short distance capabilities. The high arch of the ball allows it to hit the ground with little forward momentum, making these clubs perfectly suited for when one doesn’t want the ball to roll after making contact with the ground.
The right golf wedges for you will depend largely on your abilities. For most amateur players, experts usually recommend carrying wedges with a four-degree gap (in angle) between them. This allows for a greater variety of options when choosing one’s shot.
